Can I access SRUC libraries through the SCONUL scheme?

Answer

What is the SCONUL scheme?

The Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) scheme allows staff, researchers and part-time or distance learning students to access participating libraries.

Several member libraries also allow full-time postgraduate students to borrow items.

The scheme is free to join and there is no limit to the number of libraries that you can join.

SCONUL access to SRUC libraries

You can apply for SCONUL access to SRUC libraries here:

SCONUL access application

Please contact your destination SRUC library in advance of your visit.

Library opening hours can be checked here.

Some libraries may only be able to complete your registration during office hours, or at certain points in the term.

When visiting an SRUC library, please bring a print out of your approval email and your institution ID card.

SRUC libraries reserve the right to restrict access to SCONUL visitors during times of high patron volume around exams.

What can a SCONUL visitor access?

SCONUL access differs depending on your ‘Band’ of membership.  This goes from R (lowest) > C > B > A (highest) and depends on your course type or staff status.

All Bands are eligible for physical access to the library space and can use physical materials on-site, though this may be restricted around the exam periods.

Borrowing permissions differ by Band.  Band R only has access rights to the library itself and no borrowing rights, other Bands may be entitled to borrow up to five items from SRUC libraries.
